Discover the remarkable stillness and beauty of the park in winter.
Lassen Volcanic National Park is best known as a summer destination for mountain lakes, bubbling mud pots, and boiling hot springs, but these geologic wonders are doubly beautiful when trimmed by snow. Contrary to what you may have heard, the Main Park Road is not closed in winter, but plowed on the south side of the park and as far as the Loomis Museum on the north side. If you tread out on your own, you’ll need a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skiis, so be sure to bring or rent them en route. Or take a ranger-led snowshoe walk; gear is included for all participants. All walks start at the Lassen Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitors Center, at the park’s south entrance.
